Navigating ABA and EIDBI as a Somali Family in Minnesota
A guide written specifically for Minnesota's East African community β how to access services, what to expect, and how to advocate for your child in Somali and English.
EIDBI stands for Early Intensive Developmental and Behavioral Intervention β it's a Minnesota Medicaid benefit that covers ABA therapy and related services for children under 21 with autism, intellectual disability, or related conditions. Most children with a qualifying diagnosis and MN Medical Assistance qualify. We handle verification for you at no charge.
Typically 2β4 weeks from first contact to therapy start. After your free consultation, we complete insurance verification (1β3 days), schedule the comprehensive assessment, and begin services as soon as authorization is approved. We move as fast as your insurance allows.
Sessions are typically 2β4 hours and delivered by a trained Behavior Technician using your child's individualized treatment plan. Goals are practiced through structured activities and play, data is collected on every trial, and progress is reviewed weekly by your child's supervising BCBA. Parents receive regular updates and are involved in goal-setting.
Yes, and we encourage it β especially early on. Parent involvement is a core part of our approach. Your presence helps therapists understand your child better, and it helps you learn strategies you can use at home. Parent training sessions are also available separately and billable under EIDBI.
We work with many managed care plans including UCare, Medica, and Blue Cross Blue Shield of MN. Call us at (651) 706-4563 or book a free consultation and we'll verify your specific plan before you commit to anything.
